Washim Introduction:Washim district is located between latitude 19 50‚ ” to 20 44‚ “N & longitude 74 40‚ “to 77 10‚ “E is 5153 sq. km. According to 1991census population is 8.62 lakhs. (Rural 7.22 urban 1.40) district head quarter is located in proper Washim taluka at kata road admistrative building room no 209. Geography:The average altitude ranges from 567 to335 amsl. The drainage pattern is of dendritic to trellis, partiallel in structurally controlled area. Main basins are
1) Painganga- Godavari basin 2) Wardha basin 3) Purna - Tapi basin. Major rivers are Painganga, Manora, Katepurna, Adan, Arunavati, Pus, and Bembla
Geology:Washim district totally comprises of Deccan trap ranging in age from upper Miocene to lower Eocene Hydrology:Water bearing formation is weathered / fractured /jointed vesicular / massive basalt under phreatic & semi-confined condition. Flows are represented by massive portion at bottom & vesicular at top & are separated from each other by red bole. The weathered, fractured trap occurring in topographic lows from main aquifer in district. The vesicular portion of different lava flow varies in thickness from, 8-10 m & forms the potential zones. PREMONSOON WATER LEVEL:
The depth to water level in the district under normal rainfall conditions during may ranges beetween5-12 meter bgl shallow water level within 10 mbgl are seen in almost entire district i.e. northern part of Risod taluka & entire Malegaon, Washim, Mangrulpir, Manora and Karanja. Water level in the ranges of 10-29 mbgl are observed in isolated patches in southern part of Risod, northern part of Malegaon & nw part of Karanja.
POST MONSOON WATER LEVEL:
The depth of water level during November ranges between 1.00 mbgl & 11.20 mbgl. in the entire district the water levels are shallow within 10 mogul . water levels of 2-5 mbgl is most dominant range occupying almost entire Rrisod , Malegaon , Manora, & major parts of Washim Mangrulpir and Karanja . Water level less than 2 mbgl are observed in isolated patches ie in southern parts of Karanja. Water level of 5-10 mbgl is also observed in isolated patches ie.in southern parts of Karanja.
Washim, Malegaon, Risod, Manora taluka belongs to the runoff zone i.e. ,there is 1st order drainage & having shallow water table during monsoon to winter season. Water bearing zone is from 80-100 feet, below that there is massive compact hard trap. It has no acceptance of rainwater hence during monsoon period some of bore wells overflow. Karanja, Mangrulpir taluka belong to the recharge zone i.e. there is 2nd order drainage moderately to highly fractured trap act as good aquifers water bearing zone for bore well is from 160 to 200 feet. There is good groundwater potential for development Karanja town is located in basin type topography.
Direction of Karanja town there is Rishi M.I tank which is slightly situated on higher altitude hence by gravity groundwater movement from M I tank to town is fast. Near about 95 % bore wells & dug wells having adequate water even though in summer season there is moderately to highly fractured trap act as a good aquifer.
