(Note on activities of Groundwater Surveys and Development Agency)

Groundwater Surveys and development Agency together with World Bank is implementing  Jalswarajya – II programme in the State vide GR No. JSII-1213/CRNO.-200/WS-11 Dt. 04 Jan. 2014. Details of seven components under Jalswarajya – II programme implemented by Groundwater Surveys and development Agency are as follows.

  1. Aquifer Mapping and Community based Groundwater Management

The objective of this sub-component is to make the groundwater resource sustainable by participatory groundwater management approach, with demand and supply side interventions. 12 aquifers has been delineated in 97 Villages from 10 watersheds in 7 districts namely Pune, Satara, Ahmadnagar, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Amravati, Buldhana. In these 12 aquifers participatory groundwater management will be implemented as per the norms finalised by the GSDA and the World Bank. The project includes aquifer delineation by detail systematic hydro geological, geophysical and geochemical surveys, preparation and implementation of groundwater management action plan (GWMAP) with community participation, source strengthening, water conservation and harvesting, capacity building and mass awareness of community and stake holders. The tenure of this component is of six years and total estimated cost is RS 108.77 crore. It will help in ensuring safe and sustainable water supply for all purposes in these 97 villages.

Ground water management Action Plan (GWMAP)

The Groundwater   Management Action Plan has been prepared with the community participation comprising of supply and demand side interventions. The supply side measure mainly consists of Recharge Shaft, Recharge Trench, Gabbion structure, Water Absorption Trench (WAT) and Cement Bandhara.

2 Mitigation measures to address water quality issues in water quality affected areas, along with service improvements

The objective of this sub-component is to address the critical water quality challenges, with appropriate technical and operational solution, along with service improvement in the target villages and to provide safe potable drinking water to maximum number of households with minimum cost. 112 TDS and Fluoride affected   habitations finalized in 12 districts namely Pune, Satara, Ahmadnagar, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Nanded, Amravati, Buldhana, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Raigad & Ratnagiri. PWS from safe source, technological options, dilution or new source, these schemes will be implemented to provide safe and secure drinking water to quality affected habitations. The tenure of this component is of six years and total estimated cost is RS 82.50 crore. It will help in ensuring safe and sustainable water supply for drinking in these 112 habitations.

  1. Water supply measures in water scarce habitations having population less than 500

The objective of this sub-component is to address the critical water stress challenges, with appropriate technical and operational solution, along with service improvement in the target villages and to provide safe potable drinking water to maximum number of households with minimum cost during acute scarcity period of 90 to 120 days. 102 scarcity affected habitations having population less than 500 has been finalized in 12 districts namely Pune, Satara, Ahmadnagar, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Nanded, Amravati, Buldhana, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Raigad & Ratnagiri. Rain, ground water or spring based storage tanks, source strengthening, rejuvenation of existing PWS, these schemes will be implemented to provide safe and secure drinking water to scarcity affected habitations. The tenure of this component is of six years and total estimated cost is RS 100.00 crore. It will help in ensuring safe and sustainable water supply for drinking in these 112 habitations.

  1. Establishing Groundwater Level Monitoring Network in all villages of the state

Existing network of 3818 observation wells and 1136 piezometeres is not adequate for detail study of ground water behavior and assessment. So it is proposed to establish groundwater level monitoring stations at village level in the entire State. It is proposed to record the groundwater level of the observation well by the Jalsurakshak at the village level. The tenure of this component is of six years and total estimated cost is RS 12.37 crore

  1. Strengthening of Hydro-meteorological Station (HMS)

The objective is to carry out strengthening of existing Hydro-meteorological stations by incorporating

state of art instrumentation and up scaling the facilities thereof to yield quality data that can be used in Groundwater estimation, scarcity prediction and water balance study etc.  The existing HMS station, two each from the revenue division of the State shall be strengthened and upgraded by installing Automatic Weather Station. The tenure of this component is of six years and total estimated cost is RS 2.37 crore

  1. Strengthening of six regional groundwater quality testing Laboratories

The objective of the project is to meet the demands of water quality monitoring protocols laid down by GoI. To meet the requirements of GoI, it is proposed to strengthen the 6 regional laboratories under Jalswarajya II. This would entail additional staff requirements and construction of additional buildings. Under this project the additional construction of existing building (4 Regional Laboratories), establishment of 28 district and 148 sub-divisional laboratories, procurement of scientific equipment’s (all Regional, District and Subp-divisional Laboratories) are proposed. NMABL accreditation of 6 regional and 28 district labs is also proposed in this project. The tenure of this component is of six years and total estimated cost is RS 40.00 crore

  1. Real time Groundwater Level Data Monitoring

The objectives of this component is to monitor the ground water levels at high frequency (to be decided on network analysis) for better management of Groundwater resources locally with the help of community and to measure groundwater level with the advancement of the mobile telecommunication and technology with refinement of the existing process and to make it more accurate by monitoring rainfall and water quality in drinking water supply wells. Two districts i.e. Aurangabad & Chandrapur are selected to complete the  activity. The tenure of this component is of six years and total estimated cost is RS 4.66 crore
